Ok, as promised, I am opening up a thread for people to talk about the (re)thinking walking zine! The first batch of orders has gone out, at least one person has actually read the damn thing that I know of–if you get yours and want to leave a comment–please feel free to!

And I am not looking for only positive feedback! If you want to say it sucks, please do so–but please tell me specifically what sucked and why so that I can start working on that particular thing for my next zine!!!

Oh, and if you’re a newbie zinster like I am, or an old timer–PUHLEEZE share some of your own experiences with us!!!!

AND–if you want to order your own zine, click here!

i got it! :) mine arrived today and i sat right down to read it immediately. i don’t, however, feel comfortable to give immediate comments. i’d like to think about it, and read thru it again before i say anything more. i’m just so excited to see it!

I like it! I thought the content was moving and thought-provoking. I like the format, too. My only (pragmatic) suggestion is to staple the spine…you’ll need one of those longish heavy-duty ones – if you don’t have one I’ll keep an eye peeled when I’m out thrifting. I bet a guillotine-type paper cutter would help too, you’re going to give yourself carpal tunnel hand-cutting all those sheets of paper. Or you could make the kids do it. ;^)
I think you should just keep making them and having fun with them and exploring the process.
Oh, I have a question, if this is an okay place for it: how is the zine-making process different for you than the blogging? What parts of it do you like or dislike? What is especially enjoyable about it?

hmm… Nora, i don’t think stapling would work with the flow that she has going… the way things run from one page to the other would be totally mucked up by a staple in the way, don’t you think? i also just don’t think stapling is “necessary” and i’ve seen lots of zines that don’t use staples. a paper cutter is definitely a good idea though!

Oh, I just meant something like two staples right in the “ditch” there – like the way book signatures are sewn together (if that makes sense). In other words, each page would still lay totally flat but the whole thing would stick together. (I just worry about losing pages; but it’s certainly not necessary, and in fact it could be interesting to “shuffle” the pages on purpose and re-read it…)

  9. Aaminah

ha! i didn’t even think of shuffling pages! since it’s all related… hmm… i wonder if one consciously made a zine that was intended to allow folks to shuffle pages and come up with something totally different…

I’m still waiting to get this in my dirty little hands–Aaminah,I’ve seen zines like that, separate pieces of paper that can be rearranged and such enclosed in a “cover” envelope. Its a cool concept.

I love mine. I received it a couple days ago but I was buried in work and didn’t want to read it with tired eyes. I’m glad I didn’t. I love the criss-crossing text and the way it made reading fun again–I mean, not that I don’t usually enjoy reading, but it’s also something I often do on autopilot, whereas this reminded me of when I was young trying to follow the liner notes on punk albums, like, I can’t just skim this or scroll over it, I have to pay attention to where it’s going. Which is nice in the way it dovetails with walking; it’s like the text is moving too.

I loved “to enjoy…nature.” That cracked me up. I have this tense fucked-up relationship with “nature” and I need to fix it so I’m thinking a lot about that right now.

I love the little kid drawings. I love the Colorado stories.

I love that you said you were going to do this and then you did it and now here it is, because that whole process (step 1! step 2! step 3!) I cannot even fathom.

It’s fabulous and you can’t have mine back, so there. :P

K–your kind words (which I’m not sure I earned!!!!) were just about the perfect thing I needed to read. I have been in a bit of a depressed funk the past week–just too much life. you know?

thank you so much for sharing your kind words–I promise I LOVE everybody who gives me gritty helpful feedback, I really do!!!!!!!!! but…a girl’s ego does love some gentle snuggling from a beautiful girl!!!!!!

    thank you thank you!
    xo

haha what did we not snuggle your ego enough?!? *snuggle*

Some short person (or peoples) knocked my (your!) zine on the floor and shuffled it around and gave it a very au natural well-read look. So I re-read it in the new (dis)order and a few things did pop differently and I am now missing the pace of the original order so I’m trying to get it back there. It did inspire a writing surge around some stuffs–about walking too-that have been kind of stagnant and stuck for awhile.
Thanks. I really like the zine and have wanted to do one for so long. We’ve got some major changes coming up round here and maybe I can work on on during that time. I also want my kids to make some and I hope they dig that idea.
