in a genre you are not comfortable with?
why not?

~today i have discovered it takes courage to ‘not know what you’re doing.” or to “not be good” at something.

Courage!

actually, when i first started to write in short fiction, it wasn’t something i was used to or wanted to do. i loved reading fiction, but not short fiction. i didn’t understand the point of short fiction. and maybe that was partially a reaction to having to read so much of it in school, in schools were poc writers were so woefully rare in the curriculums. but anyway, i was more interested in writing articles, essays, poetry. so i took a course that required me to write, and there was an option to focus on either non-fiction or short fiction and of course i chose non-fiction. but my teacher made me write a piece of short fiction for one early assignment because she said it was important to try something out of my element. to this day that short story is one of my favorite pieces of my own writing, and it led to me completely changing my direction in that class and in my writing in general, including selling a few pieces of short fiction. :) i’m not saying that trying something different will completely change everyone’s direction. i just think it is good for us to try something different, new, out of our element, to take a risk, to stretch ourselves a bit.

This is exactly what I was talking to my best friend about today. I’m taking the step and saying and claiming what I want today. I want to be a writer, and am starting to work on a book. I’m terrified because I don’t think I’m that great of a writer, and I think I might suck, but its what I want to do. Here’s to courage!!

uhhh… well I am trying to write a program for the Mac, and that is pretty uncomfortable. It’s not like conventional writing… it’s more like creating a brain, which makes my brain hurt, and my spirit uncomfortable. It has no expression.

Short fiction. I wrote a story and it was original and terrible.

But I felt good that I tried, horrible as it was.

I paint, too, and even though it’s not “writing,” it’s a constant exercise in stretching color and imagination to new levels. My latest is an absolute nightmare – a slosh of purple, brown, yellow, and aqua.

I keep staring at it, embarrassed by it, but knowing it took courage to try new colors, a new dimension, and go for it.

Embracing the originality as well as the “failure” of it all…

Breaking my 20 year sabbatical from writing fiction. :) Not as painful as I thought and kind of fun. I’m coming up with something to write during NAMO month which is November.

I hope your kitty comes home soon.

I have been writing a satire. I don’t know what possessed me to do it, but I have what seems to be a great idea, and now I am trying to flesh it out.

It isn’t easy. Especially w/ the fear that done poorly it could be a disaster.

Started work on writing a book. Scary as all hell but it took a ton of courage to actually start…

What do you think?
